Influenza Vaccine for Children from 6 Months to Eight Years, Updated Recommendations for 2007-2008
Influenza virus is the most common serious respiratory infection in children. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that children between six months to two years (like adults over 65, those with respiratory conditions, and those with metabolic or immune-compromising conditions) are at risk more serious side effects, including pneumonia, from this infection. The CDC has, therefore, recommended influenza vaccine for children between the ages of six months and two years of age. The American Academy of Pediatrics supports the CDC's recommendation. These organizations have also recommended that all children up to five years old should be immunized because they are more likely to be the source of spread for others than people in other age groups.
Therefore, we are recommending that children in our practice in this age group, as well as those living in a dormitory setting, and all those with underlying medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, static encephaolpathy, heart disease, Kawasaki Disease, adrenal insufficiency immunosupression, etc. receive the vaccine.
The vaccine is given in two doses separated by 4 weeks for those under nine years old who have not had it before. To provide protection this winter, both doses should be administered by mid-December.
If you would like your child to receive the vaccine, simply bring him/her to the nurses' station in our office. No appointment is necessary, but the child should be in good health.
Please call one of the doctors if you have any questions.
